You may find yourself asking where the name One Chapter Soy Candles came from; it is a bit of a mouthful, but the significance of the name is of such importance. So, here is the story.
On October 6, 2004, my parents sat me and my brother down and told us that my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was only 9 at the time. I do not think I was able to process the heaviness of the situation. I immediately ran to my room and grabbed my Bible and turned to Deuteronomy 31:6, a verse that my fourth-grade teacher had just taught us. A verse that, to this day, is my source of encouragement. It goes, do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you!
My mom fought her breast cancer for 16 months. It was hard to watch her get sick and lose her hair, but I have blocked most of that out of my mind. Finally, at the beginning of 2006, she was finally in remission. And she hit the ground running. Her support group had an avid biker in the mix so she began road biking and training for Komen’s Ride for the Cure that coming September. She also decided that she wanted to start making soy wax candles. She named the company One Chapter Soy Candles because she wholeheartedly believed (and still believes) that cancer was just one chapter in her life; that it is not the whole book.
She started selling candles at farmer’s markets around the Roaring Fork Valley. I remember I used to love it when I could go with her to the markets. She sold candles to friends and even let me sell some as a fundraiser for ballet camp! After a while the company fizzled, life became too busy. My mom and I still made candles to give away all the time.
Then this past fall I went on a trip around the world and came back wanting to do something different. I have been working front desk jobs since I was 16 and to be honest, I was getting a little tired of them. I believe that my way to help those around me is to create a community around these candles. They brought my mom and me closer after her battle with cancer, and I wholeheartedly believe that they can be a force of joy and happiness. That is why I decided to bring this family company back for its next chapter!
I hope that One Chapter Soy Candles will not only create amazing hand-poured scented soy wax candles but also create hope and happiness around the world! These candles make amazing gifts for anyone, but also what a perfect gift for a breast cancer survivor or fighter! With a story to let everyone know, they are not alone and they can do it!
